DR.

Dear Grand Mufti Ceric, International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, ICAN...

Many congratulations, ICAN, on the well-deserved award! It is our great joy and honor as faith communities to have been working with you over the years toward our shared goal! We are so proud of you!

Also, we would like to appreciate ICAN as they said they would like to share the great joy of the award with all the hibakusha and all the people who wish a world free from nuclear weapons. As Faith Communities Concerned about Nuclear Weapons we would like to congratulate again.

Also, I would like to thank you, Grand Mufti Ceric, to work together thus far.

Today, I would like to inform you that Akira Kawasaki, one of the ICAN Steering Committee members, and two hibakusha from Hidankyo (the organization A-bomb survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan), had a press conference at Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan here in Tokyo
yesterday.

In the Q&A session, Akira Kawasaki pointed out that nuclear weapons in any hands are dangerous and wrong. He also said that faith communities have an important role to play as they reach out to many ordinary people and focus on the survival of humanity.

Sueichi Kido, hibakusha from Hidankyo, said that education holds the key and hoped that everybody listens to the stories of hibakusha. He added that he would be happy to go to anywhere to tell what happened in 1945.

What they said, I mean a role of faith communities and that of education, well explains why we are here and how we can contribute to this cause. In this sense, I would like to appreciate Akira and Mr. Kido for his words.

Also, I read an article recently with a keen interest in which the
author says: "Although I believe that some of these policy and technical issues are significant and should be addressed, they are not what I want to delve into here. As someone who believes that nuclear weapons are dangerous and their use immoral, I see the nuclear weapons ban treaty as an achievement for humanity." I deeply echo the author's view.

The adoption of the ban treaty and receiving Nobel Peace Prize this year mark the opening of a new phase in our efforts. Priority is to get the ban treaty to enter into force. We need to promote the treaty so that more people are informed to raise their voices.

In this context, I am pleased to inform you that an animation about the risks of nuclear war and the importance of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons has been released recently. I hope you will find it useful. Here is the link.
